South Dakota Farmers Union is affiliated with the National Farmers Union, based in Washington, D.C. Each year South Dakota sends a number of delegates, based upon total membership numbers, to the National Farmers Union Convention to represent the state . These delegates, which are elected at the SDFU State Convention, help shape the national policy program for the organization. Policies which are passed at the state level can be brought for consideration at the national convention. Delegates can also propose changes and additions to the national policy program from the floor during the annual National Farmers Union Convention.
