June 28, 2016 – By #South Dakota Farmer Union

My name is Jason Hanson and I am currently a member of the South Dakota Farmers Union Summer Staff. I have been looking forward to working for Farmers Union for some time now, and becoming Summer Staff puts me in a position that I have done almost everything to represent my home state of South Dakota that I most dearly love.

The list of things that I have been involved with would include being a member of the 2015 Junior Advisory Council, becoming a Torchbearer, being a delegate for Marshall County at the 2015 State Convention, and then later going on to be a delegate at the National Farmers Union Convention representing South Dakota. This is just a condensed list of the opportunities that have been given to me through South Dakota Farmers Union.

I started when I was about 6, going to my local day camps and then later on that summer going to district camps on Richmond Lake, near Aberdeen SD, I have been taught the fundamentals of what Farmers Union stands for, such as where and why it has started and why it such an important part of not only South Dakota but the nation at a large, to help represent the small 1% of all Americans being family farmers.

I did not personally grow up on a farm, but I have always been involved in agriculture through working at my aunts’ farm when I was a child to when I was in high school working on a family farm outside of my home town of Britton, Zuehlke Feedlot and Farms. Working on the farm around cattle and machinery really shows a person what is important not only to your local economy but how important less than 1% of the American population can be by feeding not only America but helping to feed the world. These are a few of the reasons that I wanted to become a SDFU Sumner Staff, to teach kids at Farmers Union leadership camps about the importance of family farmers and agriculture in general.

Farmers Union leaderships have been so influential in my life and I wish for it to be a large part of others’ lives and for them to experience some of the amazing experiences that I have been a part of.
